Ecclesiastes 2
As we continue the search for life's meaning, we move on to chapter 2 of Ecclesiastes. The author lists the endless amount of possessions and positions he has, and concludes that they are all meaningless without God, since we can't take them with us when we pass. Turn from a life of consumerism to a life of consuming God.

We begin a new series based on Ecclesiastes, entitled "Searching for the Meaning of Life". As the author reflects on that question, he finds that life is meaningless if based on the routines, memories and wisdom of the world. We then see throughout Scripture, our life does have eternal meaning, if we see things through the eyes of Jesus.

As we enter the new year, we are reminded to take time to rest. If we don't, we can become anxious and unfruitful in our Christian walk. God rested on the seventh day of Creation, and exhorts us to do the same. Build into your life a time of rest, a time to focus on your relationship with Christ. Shift from restlessness to restfulness.

As we conclude the series on those who encountered the coming Christ, we see how the King of the Universe revealed himself to humble shepherds. It was appropriate, since throughout the Hebrew scriptures, Jesus was referred to as the Shepherd King, who will provide all that we need.

The Magi were important principles in the Christmas story. They studied the stars and the prophecies regarding a promised Messiah, and then risked travel over many weeks to find him. He was the hope of the nations. As we diligently seek the Messiah, God will lead us to Him.

As we begin the Advent Series, "Encounters with the Coming Christ", we examine the story of Zechariah. We see that his faithful prayers and service resulted in God's answer. We can learn 2 things from Zechariah's life: 1) keep praying, and don't lose hope, 2) Live in faith that God is present with us.

Haggai 2:10-23
As we conclude our study of Haggai, we see God promising blessing when the heart of the people changed, even though they had not finished the task of rebuilding the Temple. When we have a heart oriented toward God, the cross's power is found and He unleashes His blessing. In this way, we can resist casual Christianity.
