As we begin the Advent Series, "Encounters with the Coming Christ", we examine the story of Zechariah. We see that his faithful prayers and service resulted in God's answer. We can learn 2 things from Zechariah's life: 1) keep praying, and don't lose hope, 2) Live in faith that God is present with us.

Haggai 2:10-23
As we conclude our study of Haggai, we see God promising blessing when the heart of the people changed, even though they had not finished the task of rebuilding the Temple. When we have a heart oriented toward God, the cross's power is found and He unleashes His blessing. In this way, we can resist casual Christianity.

Haggai 2:1-9
Though we know we need to grow in Christ, sometimes we get stuck in 1) Enjoy the good ol' days Christianity, 2) Read more books Christianity, 3) Cruise Control Christianity, or 4) Spiritually powerless Christianity. Instead, we should 1) Become more aware of His presence now, for He is with you, 2) Find hope in the past, and 3) Find hope in the future.

Haggai 1:1-15
We begin a 3-part series on the Old Testament book of Haggai, which describes the circumstances surrounding the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem. As we see the attitudes and lifestyle of the Jewish people, and God's call for them to rebuild, we can see parallels to our tendency to be casual Christians, and God's call to us to not settle for anything less than His daily presence in our lives.

Luke 5:27-32
The church of Jesus is to be a hospital. Sinners saved by grace helping sinners find mercy, love and grace. Jesus was a friend of sinners. We should not only preach the Gospel of Jesus, but practice it as He did. We look at the issue of abortion. We may stand against it, but does the world see the church as a place to find love and hope. We must be pro-life for the born, as well as the unborn.

Romans 2:4
As we interact with our culture, Christians should seek to represent God's kindness and grace. As people struggle with issues in life, some raise the question of gender identity, with hopes of "fixing" what is broken. Scripture makes it clear that God created us as male or female. It's sanctification that enables us to become all that God created us to be, not the world's attempts to relieve our struggles. Even so, we need to have empathy towards others. Listen to their stories, and be available to give them hope in their struggles with identity.

As we continue to examine how Christ's church can minister in today's culture, we get insight on ministry within our city. We must take time with the people, strategize in the context of how they live, and then be patient. Take time to plant, water, and nurture the seeds of the Gospel.

Matthew 28:18-20
As we conclude the 3 part series on being followers of Jesus, we look at His last words to His disciples. We should not just rest in the knowledge of the Good News, but share it with others, have them baptized as evidence of their resurrected life, and teach them how to be His disciples.
